The Wellness Alliance Welcomes the Wellness Council of Wisconsin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Wellness Council of Wisconsin (WCWI) has formally joined the Wellness Alliance, allowing WCWI’s mission, programs and professional community to continue within a broader national organization dedicated to advancing well-being for individuals, workplaces and communities.

“We’re thrilled to welcome WCWI into the Wellness Alliance community,” said Ryan Picarella, Executive Director of the Wellness Alliance. “For years, WCWI has played a vital role in advancing wellness across Wisconsin. By bringing our organizations together, we’re strengthening our shared commitment to expanding impact, elevating expertise and fostering a world where every person thrives."

The Wellness Alliance works to advance the health and wellness of individuals, workplaces and communities through education and certification programs, resources and evidence-informed wellness frameworks. The organization was formed when two of the most recognized and influential professional associations in the wellness industry merged: The Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) and the National Wellness Institute (NWI).

“This is an exciting step for our members and the Wellness Alliance community,” said Mark Campbell, Chair of the Wellness Alliance Board. “By welcoming the Wellness Council of Wisconsin into the Wellness Alliance, we’re expanding the resources, expertise and connections available to our community. Members will benefit from a stronger network of peers; more shared knowledge; and greater opportunities to learn, grow and advance workplace well-being together.”

Since the mid-1980s, WCWI has been helping employers design results-oriented strategies that maximize the health and well-being of their employees. WCWI empowers Wisconsin organizations to create and sustain meaningful workplace wellness strategies through education, strategic support and impactful partnerships.

“For more than 40 years, WCWI has been the go-to for workplace well-being in Wisconsin, serving as a trusted resource for a community of professionals dedicated to putting people first,” said WCWI Board President Eric Ziarek. “Joining the Wellness Alliance is a natural evolution of that legacy. It gives us the opportunity to share the local leadership and connection that has defined well-being in Wisconsin on a national stage, while directly enhancing our members' experience with expanded benefits and professional connections. We are bringing the best of national innovation back to the community we’ve built right here in Wisconsin.”

Supporting this next phase of growth, WCWI Executive Director Carley Hoelzel has transitioned into the role of Associate Executive Director at the Wellness Alliance. In this position, she will help lead the integration of WCWI members and services, oversee Wisconsin-based initiatives and contribute to advancing the Wellness Alliance’s strategic priorities and continued growth.

Together, the Wellness Alliance and WCWI are building on a shared legacy of supporting workplace well-being while creating new opportunities for connection, learning and impact. The organizations are stronger together, bolstering the wellness profession and offering support to individuals, workplaces and communities.

About the Wellness Alliance: The Wellness Alliance unites the strengths of two influential professional associations in the wellness industry, the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) and the National Wellness Institute (NWI). Both organizations have a long history of leading the charge in individual and workplace wellness education, harnessing more than 80 years of combined resources and solutions. Through its education and certification programs, evidence-informed resources, and networking opportunities, the Wellness Alliance elevates and empowers professionals so they may positively impact the health and well-being of individuals, workplaces and communities. The Wellness Alliance is an affiliate of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
From Awareness to Action: The Five Pillars of a Mentally Healthy Workplace

Mental well-being isn’t just a conversation—it’s a movement. Like any movement, it requires more than good intentions. It takes structure, shared purpose, and meaningful action.

Across industries and organizations, we’ve seen an awakening—a growing recognition that mental health is not a “perk” or a personal issue to manage alone. It’s foundational to how people show up, connect, and thrive at work.

But awareness, while powerful, is only the beginning. To make lasting change, organizations need a framework—a guide that helps translate care into culture.
That’s why WCWI built the Mental Health in the Workplace Certificate on five key pillars as a roadmap that helps organizations strengthen their approach to mental well-being from the inside out.

Pillar # 1: Awareness & Education

Raise awareness and educate employees at all levels.

Change begins with understanding.
When employees and leaders alike are equipped with language, knowledge, and empathy around mental health, the workplace becomes a place of learning, not judgment.

Through awareness and education, organizations begin to replace stigma with shared understanding. Conversations that once felt uncomfortable become part of everyday dialogue.

Pillar # 2: Leadership Engagement

Cultivate leadership commitment to mental health initiatives.

Culture is shaped at the top, but it’s felt everywhere.
Leaders who prioritize mental well-being set a powerful precedent: that people matter more than productivity metrics.

When leaders are willing to model vulnerability, listen with intention, and act with compassion, they create permission for others to do the same. It’s not about having all the answers—it’s about being present, proactive, and human.

Pillar #3: Policies & Procedures

Establish clear policies to support mental health in the workplace.

Values are what we say we care about. Policies are how we prove it.

This pillar challenges organizations to look inward—at leave policies, flexibility, benefits, and return-to-work programs—and ask: Do these reflect our stated commitment to well-being?

When structures support the message, employees trust it. And when trust exists, engagement and belonging grow naturally. A well-written policy might not heal stress overnight—but it tells your people, “We see you, and we mean what we say.”

Pillar #4: Employee Support & Inclusion

Create an inclusive environment that supports mental health and well-being.

A mentally healthy workplace is one where people feel they belong.
Support and inclusion go hand in hand—because mental health isn’t one-size-fits-all.

This pillar celebrates organizations creating space for every voice. It could mean offering access to culturally competent care, developing peer support networks, or designing benefits that meet diverse needs.

Pillar #5: Measurement & Growth

Track and assess mental health efforts to foster continuous improvement.

Improvement begins with awareness—but it flourishes with accountability.
Measuring progress allows organizations to understand what’s working, where to grow, and how to sustain momentum.

This pillar encourages reflection: Are we moving the needle? Are our people feeling the difference? Growth is not a one-time milestone. It’s an ongoing practice—a continuous commitment to listen, learn, and evolve. Because the work of well-being is never truly “done.” It’s a journey we walk together.

A New Standard for Workplace Well-Being

Each pillar supports the next, creating a framework that’s both aspirational and achievable.

Through WCWI’s Mental Health in the Workplace Certificate, organizations are proving that when mental health is embedded in culture—not treated as a checkbox—everything changes. Teams communicate more openly. Leaders lead more intentionally. Employees bring their full selves to work.

This is what happens when we move from awareness to action.
Because mental well-being isn’t just a conversation—it’s a movement.
And every workplace that commits to these five pillars becomes part of the momentum driving it forward.
Learn more about how your organization can join the movement and become certified here.

We Can’t Do This Work Alone: Suicide Prevention and the Power of Community

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and it reminds us of something we know to be true: we can’t do this work alone. Not the work of preventing suicide, not the work of supporting mental health, and not the work of building workplace cultures where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

At WCWI, we see every day how connection is the difference-maker. For employees, connection can mean feeling safe enough to ask for help. For well-being professionals, connection can mean finding community in an industry that often feels isolating. For organizations, connection can mean having the tools, strategies, and shared accountability to make mental health a priority.

Awareness + Action

This month, WCWI partnered with Marquette University and Friendship Circle to bring SafeTALK training to our community. SafeTALK equips people with the awareness and confidence to notice when someone may be struggling and to take action by connecting them to support.

We also continue to amplify Make It OK, a campaign that reduces stigma and opens the door for honest conversations about mental health. These tools remind us that awareness is powerful, but awareness paired with action is life-saving.

And through our Mental Health in the Workplace Certificate Program (MHWCP), WCWI is guiding organizations to weave mental health into every layer of their culture—through policies, leadership engagement, education, and support.

The Power of Community

Still, none of this can happen in isolation. Many of you carry this work forward in your organizations as a team of one or within small groups tasked with big goals. That can feel heavy and lonely.

This is where WCWI’s community becomes vital. Through member consultations, peer groups, and networking spaces, you don’t have to do this work alone. Whether you’re new to workplace well-being or a seasoned leader, being part of a supportive network makes the work lighter, the impact deeper, and the vision clearer.

Together, We’re Stronger

Suicide prevention and workplace well-being share this truth: connection saves lives. And connection is strongest when it’s built in community.

At WCWI, we believe in walking alongside you. Not only to resource and educate, but to remind you that you are not alone in this important, sometimes challenging, always meaningful work. Together, we create workplaces where mental health is supported, stigma is reduced, and lives are valued.

An Invitation

As we honor Suicide Prevention Month, we invite you to join us. Connect with WCWI through a peer group, a member consultation, or the Mental Health in the Workplace Certificate Program. Engage with this community, because together we can move from awareness to action—and none of us have to do this work alone.

- WCWI Team

More than a membership...it's a movement.

wcwi@wellnesscouncilwi.org

The Wellness Council of Wisconsin (WCWI) is proud to announce a community partnership with the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality (WCHQ)—uniting around a shared mission to build a healthier Wisconsin through data-driven strategies, cross-sector collaboration, and workforce well-being.

As WCWI enters its 40th year, we remain committed to supporting organizations in transforming workplace culture through inclusive, sustainable, and strategic well-being initiatives. WCHQ’s commitment to transparent measurement and performance improvement across Wisconsin’s healthcare systems aligns deeply with WCWI’s mission to foster healthier employees, organizations, and communities.

Through this partnership, WCWI and WCHQ will:
• Collaborate on initiatives that support the mental health and well-being of healthcare and public health workers
• Explore opportunities to integrate workforce well-being data into broader healthcare performance strategies
• Share tools, resources, and best practices that advance both population health and workforce resiliency
• Partner on events and conversations that drive action across sectors

“Healthcare quality doesn’t exist without a thriving, resilient workforce,” said Carley Hoelzel, Executive Director of WCWI. “We’re proud to explore this partnership with WCHQ—recognizing that improving care starts with supporting those who deliver it.”

“Our healthcare workforce is the backbone of quality care and community health,” added Gabrielle Rude, CEO of WCHQ. “Partnering with WCWI allows us to expand our focus beyond clinical outcomes to include the well-being of those who make those outcomes possible. Together, we’re building a stronger, more sustainable foundation for health in Wisconsin.”

About WCHQ

Founded in 2004 by visionary leaders from Wisconsin’s healthcare community, the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality (WCHQ) is a voluntary, clinician-led organization committed to transparency, innovation, and collaboration. WCHQ publicly reports on the quality and affordability of healthcare services and provides its members—ranging from rural hospitals to integrated health systems—with actionable insights that drive performance improvement.

Maximizing Employee Wellness Program Participation

Employee wellness programs are essential for fostering a healthier, more engaged workforce. However, participation rates can vary widely depending on program design, incentives, and company culture. Understanding industry benchmarks and best practices can help organizations optimize their wellness initiatives for maximum impact.

Industry Benchmarks for Wellness Program Participation

Wellness program participation rates fluctuate based on the type of program, level of employer support, and the presence of incentives. Below are some general benchmarks:

Overall Participation:

30-50% for voluntary programs

60-80% when incentives (e.g., premium discounts, gift cards) are offered

90%+ when wellness programs are embedded into company culture

Health Screenings & Biometric Testing:

50-60% participation with incentives

30-40% participation without incentives

Health Risk Assessments (HRAs):

40-60% participation with incentives

20-40% participation without incentives

Wellness Challenges & Lifestyle Programs:

30-50% participation, with higher engagement in team-based challenges

Mental Health & Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs):

5-10% utilization for traditional EAPs

20-30% for proactive mental health programs with coaching and digital tools

Chronic Condition Management Programs:

10-20% participation, typically linked to medical necessity

Wisconsin-Specific Wellness Program Participation Data

Many Wisconsin organizations are making significant strides in employee wellness participation. Notably, several WCWI member organizations have achieved high engagement rates:

Well Wisconsin Program (State Employees):

36.7% of eligible state employees participated in 2022, showing a rebound from the pandemic's impact.

University System Participation:

The Universities of Wisconsin system reported a 29.9% participation rate in the Well Wisconsin Program for 2024.

Several institutions exceeded 38% participation, including:

UW-Eau Claire

UW-Green Bay

UW Oshkosh

UW-Stevens Point

UW-Stout

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Utilization:

Individual EAP utilization among Wisconsin state employees reached 5.9% in 2022, slightly above the national average of 5%.

Total EAP engagement, including counseling and training sessions, reached 21%.

These figures demonstrate that while Wisconsin organizations are performing well, there is still room for growth. By implementing targeted strategies, such as enhancing program accessibility, offering meaningful incentives, and fostering a culture that prioritizes well-being, participation rates can continue to rise.

Key Factors That Influence Participation

To increase engagement in wellness programs, consider these critical factors:

1. Incentives Matter

Research shows that participation rates increase by 20-30% when financial or tangible rewards are offered. Effective incentives include health insurance discounts, gift cards, and extra PTO.

2. Leadership Support is Crucial

When executives and managers actively participate in wellness initiatives, employees are more likely to engage. Leadership endorsement fosters a culture of well-being.

3. Ease of Access Drives Engagement

Programs that are mobile-friendly and easily accessible during work hours tend to see higher participation rates. Employees should be able to engage in wellness activities without disrupting their workflow.

4. Company Culture Shapes Participation

Organizations that prioritize employee well-being in their mission and values see participation rates between 70-90%. A wellness-focused culture integrates health initiatives into daily work life.

5. Communication & Personalization Enhance Engagement

Regularly promoting wellness programs through multiple channels (email, intranet, posters, team meetings) helps sustain interest. Personalizing offerings based on employee preferences also boosts participation.

Industry Insights and Resources

Championing Growth through Strengths and Connections

WCWI's Spring Learning Circle

A team of professionals from different parts of Wisconsin met recently at the Kacmarcik Center for Human Performance in Grafton. They learned about their CliftonStrengths, which are unique talents that can drive personal and professional development. The CliftonStrengths 34 profile helps people identify and use their strengths daily, enhance relationships, and boost teamwork. Todd Kraiss and Tracey Tradewell led exercises to help attendees realize their value within their teams and come up with individual development plans. By leveraging the domains of team strength - Executing, Influencing, Relationship Building, and Strategic Thinking - organizations can appreciate the valuable contributions each team member offers to the team’s success.

The Wellness Council of Wisconsin (WCWI) knows that companies that focus on employee growth enhance their well-being. Businesses value strengths such as achiever, woo, developer, ideation, positivity, and activator in their employees. These strengths contribute to business success. When workplaces provide ample growth opportunities, development, and support, individuals thrive.

By acknowledging and nurturing the unique strengths of each team member, organizations can cultivate a conducive environment for personal and professional growth. To do this, they need to understand what makes each team member unique and foster an inclusive and supportive workplace culture that encourages continuous development. The CliftonStrengths assessment is valuable in offering insights into personal talents and strengths. By embracing and harnessing these strengths, individuals can optimize their potential, improve their relationships, and significantly contribute to their team's success. When companies provide opportunities for growth, learning, and support, individuals are more likely to thrive and make meaningful contributions to team success.

In conclusion, by utilizing tools like the CliftonStrengths assessment and fostering a culture of growth and development, organizations can unleash their teams' full potential while enhancing the well-being and success of each team member. WCWI appreciates the organizations that participated in the recent Learning Circle workshop and looks forward to supporting their personal and professional growth through WCWI's 2024 Learning Agenda.

Empowering HR Professionals: Mental Health Discussion Recap

Last week, the WCWI Community and Metro Milwaukee SHRM members gathered for an impactful discussion on mental health for HR professionals. During the session, Mental Health America-Lakeshore and NAMI Southeast Wisconsin, WCWI's community partners, shared insights on the business case for implementing workplace policies, procedures, and initiatives to support employees and their families' mental health. One of the policies discussed was related to returning to work after a suicide attempt. This is a growing concern in organizations across Wisconsin, and as wellbeing professionals, it's our responsibility to act on this urgent call for support.

Attendees had the opportunity to connect with Wisconsin organizations like the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Rogers Behavioral Health, The Real Good Life, Vesta Senior Network, and Employee Resource Center. They shared ideas and resources for workplace wellbeing strategies, further amplifying the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace.

The discussion also emphasized the importance of creating a culture of psychological safety in the workplace. This means that employees should feel comfortable speaking up about their mental health concerns without fear of stigma or retaliation. As HR professionals, we play a vital role in creating this culture by fostering open communication and destigmatizing mental health issues.

Another key takeaway from the discussion was the need for training and education around mental health for HR professionals. This includes learning about the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, as well as how to provide support and resources to employees who may be struggling. By equipping ourselves with this knowledge, we can better serve our employees and create a more supportive and inclusive workplace.

Overall, the mental health discussion was a valuable opportunity for HR professionals to come together and learn about the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace. As we continue to navigate the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, it's more important than ever to prioritize the wellbeing of our employees and create a workplace culture that supports mental health.
